Final STEP Planning Meeting November 14th - Agenda and Minutes


Join us at the final STEP planning meeting is this Monday the 14th in the Community Building.  As usual, we will have a light supper served shortly after 6 PM with the work to begin at 6:30 led by our Coach Chilton Rogers. The group will plan the presentation to the Town Council. We'll be confirming all our budget numbers and our projects.
We are at the point that transformations of our community will begin!

o   Where can additional/leveraged funds be found?
o   Project assignments – Who’s organizing, leading and working on which projects?

I. Welcome and Announcements 

Newly re-elected Mayor McNeil welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Update on budget from Town Manager Bob S. on how much is left in the STEP budget funds.

Janet R. did report on Community Streetscape. Johnny R. will resend the designs to 
everyone. A plan will be drawn and we should find a local brick mason to design.

Upcoming Meetings:
STEP Regional Peer Learning > Star / Warsaw: Request for attendees: John and Margie will go to Star for this meeting.

II.  Strategy Reports:

Broadening Education Team: Margie reported
Physical Design Team: Janet reported
Leadership Team: Mary Francis reported
Entrepreneurship: Chilton reported. (Kim was absent due to a death in her family.)

III. Final Review of Project Importance, Order, and STEP Dollars Allocation
Discussion took place. Notes below:

Broadening Education budget changes:
$3500. Tables  / Seating / Utility area with sinks, refrigerator, warming oven.
$1500. Internet, projector and screen, stage
$15,000. Programming (After school programs, arts, music and performances)
$30,000. Director: $60,000 ($30,000 – 30,000: 1/2 in kind and changing incrementally) 
$ 15,000. Maintainance / Utilities for 14 months - need estimate on utilities from town. ($600-$700) 
$65,000 

Physical Design Team budget changes:
Was $14,000 and went to:
Clean Teams $ 0
Entryway Signs / Rural Dev - 1 sign $ 0
Public Art - window art in vacant building $ 0
                      mural 20‘ x 10‘ $ 0
Implementation of Streetscape Master plan $ 20,000

Energizing Entrepreneurs meeting in Red Springs on Tuesday November 1, 2011

Message from Kim Pevia:
The Rural Center/Ft. Bragg Regional Alliance/SEA continued its roving series of entrepreneurship seminars. The agenda included:
·  A welcome from Red Springs mayor John McNeill
·   An update about the growing “fourth sector” of triple bottom line companies in North Carolina, and what regions are doing to support them (John-Paul Smith, Bull City Forward, and John Parker, Good Work)
· An update on the vision and directions for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, including related to entrepreneurship development in the region (Cammie Hunt, Associate Vice Chancellor for Engaged Outreach at UNCP, and Kim Pevia, Southeastern Entrepreneurial Alliance); and
· A local look at entrepreneurship from the small town perspective of Red Springs, NC, one of several dozen STEP communities in rural NC (Margie Labadie and Kim Pevia).
